The vintage I always take on holiday
Hello! I am just back from a week in Crete with two other families and a lot of children- beautiful chaos and feeling very lucky. I managed to stuff a case full of vintage- no capsule wardrobe here. My husband wasn't convinced it would all get worn, but I proved him wrong- I know what I'm doing, thanks. I thought I would share some of the vintage that I love for sunny holidays. These are the staple pieces I always pack.
A light maxi dress. I have learnt that the last thing I want is anything tight after a day in the sun. I found this 70s metallic Indian cotton maxi via Strobe Vintage. I loved wearing it so much, and felt special whilst being totally breezy too.
Speaking of Indian cottons, they work so well on holiday. My favourite labels are Adini, Phool, Interlinks and Monsoon who all made dresses for Western export in the 70s.
Solid silver and gold jewellery that is hard-wearing. I wear my vintage silver locket and heart signet ring from Sacrosanct every day. Not vintage but with sustainability at heart, Catch Rhys makes the hoops I wear on repeat!
A great kaftan- perfect for poolside or evenings. You can't beat the 60s and 70s for this vibe.
A silk slip for sunset. Feels elevated and amazing against the skin. Just make sure you have got rid of any suncream before you put it on! I take little stain remover wipes if I am out for dinner in case of spills. The Shout ones are very good.
Nightwear as daywear. I decided to dye this nightie pre-holiday as it was looking a bit tired. I soaked it for just a couple of minutes with pink dye to get a very pale shade. I do this with a lot of whites. If you are not sure about the fabric content, Rit dye will work on synthetics as well as cotton.
A cute cotton sundress. I take one if I'm going to the beach to change into instead of sitting in a soggy swimsuit. I will often get dresses shortened too if the length is awkward- an easy and affordable alteration to make something work for you.
Scarves, an essential for me! Hides a multitude of sins, especially hair filled with suncream and sand. Great when it's hot for preventing sun stroke too- practical and stylish! I packed a handful and my daughter and her friends all asked if they could wear one too- so I will take that as a compliment- thanks kids. Also lovely tied on a bag.
The thing I love so much about vintage is that you can wear something totally unique and feel really special. It has taken me years to slowly replace the fast fashion buys of my 20s with second-hand and vintage, and I genuinely look forward to getting these out every year.
